About Us
John and Ann Ellis established the Hanging Rock Winery in 1983. Between them they had over 30 years experience in the wine industry.
Hanging Rock Winery is located 3 km. from the internationally known Hanging Rock tourist landmark and only one hour from Melbourne, on the slopes of a small mountain known as the 'Jim Jim'. It was established with the aim of making Australia’s finest sparkling wine, in the style of famous French marques like Bollinger and Krug. Many who should know, believe that they have achieved this with their Macedon NV Brut L.D.
After planting the vineyard and building the winery, which incorporates the Ellis's residence, Cellar Door was established in 1990, giving a public face to the winery.
Hanging Rock's Cellar Door is the largest and busiest in the Macedon region and provides a rewarding wine experience with over 25 wines available for tasting and purchase.
Our philosophy is to utilize our winemaking techniques to produce wines of consistent quality.
Wines and styles that reflect the time and effort spent on creating them and that demonstrate the acknowledged blending skills of winemaker John Ellis.
In addition to our vineyard on the 'Jim Jim', The Hanging Rock Winery is dedicated to the selection of premium grapes from areas of Victoria best suited to the particular variety. Winemaker John Ellis draws on his extensive experience to apply specialized techniques to enhance the characteristics of the wines.

- Hanging Rock Winery 'Macedon' Brut Cuvee LD: Hanging Rock was one of the first producers in Australia to adopt the traditional method of sparkling wine making using the traditional varieties (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). Macedon LD is Australia's most expensive sparkling wine and was voted 'Wine of the year' by John Lewis in 2007.
- Hanging Rock Winery 'Jim Jim' Sauvignon Blanc: The Jim Jim vineyard is located on the south side of the 'Jim Jim' mountain. The vineyard is at 650mt elevation and is one of Australia's coldest vineyards. This coolness provides the perfect climate to enhance the aromatic qualities of Sauvignon Blanc and provide a powerful wine. 5 stars and 94 points James Halliday's Wine Companion 2007.
