About UsMidhill Vineyard is located 2 km. west of Romsey on the road to Woodend. 6.5 acres are under vines. We produce high quality fruit, the wines from which have won several trophies and medals in recent years. The farm also is home to a herd of approximately 70 Angus cattle. The Richards family have been breeding cattle here since 1968. Hew and Di Richards planted the first Chardonnay grapes in 1993 and the vines are now well established. Subsequently Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir have been planted. The cold climate of the Macedon Ranges is conducive to slow ripening fruit and harvest is often mid autumn. We have some of our fruit made into sparkling Macedon, for which this region is so well suited. Our Blanc de Blancs Macedon is a delightful, dry, light citrus style which develops creamy yeast overtones after 3 years on lees. The Gewürztraminer ripens a little earlier than Chardonnay. The best flavour and aromas are from fruit grown in cold areas with well drained, acidic soils of volcanic origin. This describes our vineyard well. Our "Gewürz" is made in a dry style and has a classic Turkish delight flavour with a floral aroma. Our Pinot Noir (clone MV6) produced in French oak, is a well structured table wine with good varietal flavours. It will develop further complexity on cellaring. Our yearly production is small, but our hard work in the vineyard has resulted in wines receiving bronze, silver and gold medals and trophies. Our family business is growing grapes to make good wine, supplemented with growing Angus cattle for tender beef on the remainder of the property. Events
