About UsMidhill Vineyard is a small, family owned vineyard located 2 km west of Romsey on the NE aspect slope overlooking the Romsey Creek (5 Mile Creek) and in the colder part of the Macedon Ranges. The soils are clay loam, red volcanic and well drained. Average rainfall is approx 700mm and vineyard is 550m above sea level. The cold climate is conducive to producing lower production but higher quality wines. Damaging frosts are likely in the early part of the season. Effective Day Degrees are approx 1075. Consequently Grape varieties that grow well here have to be early maturing and include Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir. These make especially good table and sparkling wines. Harvest time is typically 3 weeks later than the Yarra valley and is often as late as early May. We planted our first vines in 1993. They are hand pruned, hand harvested and are managed to produce 7.4 t/ha (3 t/ acre) of grapes. The area of vines is 2.75 hectares and the fruit is made into wine under the Midhill label by selected winemakers of the region. Di and Hew Richards have built a family business growing wine grapes and breeding Angus cattle and are open to innovation and environmentally friendly farming methods. EventsMidhill Vineyard is open each year for the Budburst Wine Festival (13 and 14 November, 2010) and for the Lancefield-Romsey Wine Showcase (22 and 23 May, 2010). Winery Details
