More information...
Lane's End Vineyard was planted in the mid 1980's and hence is one of the more established vineyards in the Macedon Ranges. Since taking over in 2000, Howard Matthews & Nicki Ralph have gone about the process of working towards making premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The first glimpse of success came about in 2006 with a Gold Medal at the National Cool Climate Wine Show. 2007 saw Lane's End take out the Public Choice Trophy for the Best wine of the Macedon Ranges and 2008 saw it go one better taking out trophies for Best Chardonnay, Public Choice trophy and the Judges Choice Best Wine of the Exhibition, the Laurie Williams Perpetual trophy. Many other medals have been awarded since for our Chardonnays & Pinot Noir.
We strive to make the absolute best wine by adhering to strict guidelines on fruit yields from the vineyard, using reduced irrigation, canopy management & specific pruning techniques. In the winery, fermentation using wild, natural ( indigenous ) yeasts are used to increase flavour characteristics and the complexity of the wine as well as adding more 'silkiness' to the wine. Exteneded barrell ageing in premium French oak is employed for better integration within the wine and then the bottled wine is stored for at least a year before release for our oaked Chardonnay & Pinot Noir.
To be fully appreciated, wine is best drunk together with food and our wines are specifically made to appreciate this. Lane's End wines are not released until we think they are ready. Some people prefer wines that are more aged. Cellaring for a further 3-6 years will certainly add that further complexity to them.Further advice on ageing/cellaring our wines is advisable.
