Our entry into the wine making world has been accompanied by a few serendipitous events.
Midhill vineyard is just a few acres and looks over the pretty Romsey Creek valley towards Ochiltrees Hill. We were lucky to have as a neighbour, a pioneer winemaker of the district who advised us to plant Chardonnay and we did, in 1993. Besides being a major ingredient of sparkling Macedon, Chardonnay makes a quality table wine.
He then encouraged us to have wine made for our own label, as well as selling grapes to others. With only Chardonnay available we made a white Sparkling “Blanc de Blancs”.  Traditional sparkling is usually a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Our Blanc de Blancs Macedon has turned out to be a delightful, dry, light citrus style which develops creamy yeast overtones after 3 years on lees.

Subsequently we discovered 36 vines in the vineyard were not Chardonnay. They ripened earlier, had pink/brown berries instead of green, and were very popular with the pickers and the birds. Experts identified them as Gewurztraminer. On researching this variety, we found it gives the best flavour and aromas when grown in cold areas with well drained, acidic soils of volcanic origin. This described our vineyard site precisely.
Come and relax with friends and sit under shady trees enjoying spit-roast beef and a Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. View some of "Two Sister Artists" Natali and Elizabeth Conway’s paintings, colourful and evocative. Try some new vintage wines of Midhill: Pinot Rose 2010 and Gewurztraminer 2010… and of course our Fizz, a superb Blanc de Blancs 2006, crisp citrusy, refreshing with Yeasty overtones developed over 4 years on lees. Barrel furniture on display and made to order.
