More information...
Identified by well known winewriter Max Allen as ‘one to watch’, Paramoor Winery is one of the latest wineries in the Macedon Ranges Region but is already recognized as one of the best. Paramoor winemaker Dr Will Fraser believes the climate of the Macedon Ranges is not only highly suitable for producing world class cool climate grapes but is also very conducive to the winemaking process itself. In fact, excellence in winemaking, using not only estate grown grapes but also carefully chosen small lots of grapes from nearby first class vineyards, is what Paramoor is all about. This is a small scale, highly skilled and well equipped boutique operation that places quality way ahead of quantity and which aims to serve wine lovers who are looking for outstanding and unique wines at realistic prices. Paramoor’s 2007 ‘Joan Picton’ Pinot Noir was awarded a gold medal and trophy for best pinot noir wine at the 2009 Macedon Ranges Wine Exhibition, and Paramoor’s other 2007 pinot noir wine, the ‘Mister Jack’, was also awarded a gold medal at the 2009 Victorian Wine Show. In addition, a number of individual Paramoor wines have been highly rated by wine guru James Halliday in his 2009 and 2010 ‘Australian Wine Companions’. These include the 2006 Paramoor ‘The Fraser’ Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot (96 points) and the 2008 Paramoor Riesling ( 95 points). Paramoor wines are available through cellar door, by mail order through the Paramoor Wine Club, and in selected fine restaurants and retailers in Melbourne and surrounding areas. Paramoor Farm, with its history as a working Clydesdale horse farm, provides the setting and the ambience for the winery. The farm and winery buildings are clustered in village fashion around a large farmyard complete with cattle pens and wide range of working horse equipment. The heritage style barn, with its nineteenth century blacksmith’s forge, tack room and horse stalls now provides a wonderful cellar door sales area and venue for musical concerts and all sorts of other functions and events. The main residence has a ‘Gone With the Wind’ Southern United States presence and the neighbouring Settlers Cottage reaches back to the days of the Goldrush for its influences. Collectively they continue to charm visitors to the cellar door. Magnificent pedigree Clydesdale horses are still very much a part of the Paramoor scene, and there’s a charming B&B located in one corner of the Barn building for those who would like to stay a while.
